Plage du Métro is a sprawling beach nestled in Tarnos, in the Landes region of France. The beach is characterized by its raw and unspoiled beauty, stretching along the dune ridge and offering breathtaking views of the coastline and the Basque mountains. The sand is a bit coarse, interspersed with small pebbles, and the shores are home to intriguing boat wrecks. Despite its name, the beach has no connection to the metro transportation system; the moniker "Métro" stems from a historic link to the railway industry.
The beach is divided into two sections: a naturist zone outside the flagged area, and a supervised swimming zone. Lifeguards oversee the area from mid-June to mid-September, ensuring the safety of all beachgoers. However, visitors should note that the sea can sometimes be rough.
Plage du Métro provides a range of amenities for visitors. Upon entry, there is a tourist office, cafes, and toilets. A short walk from the entrance leads to the sandy beach, where information boards about local wildlife can be found. There are also a restaurant, a kiosk, and additional toilet facilities available on site. Near the beach, a small square called "placette du Métro" offers takeaway food, sweet snacks, and a surf school.
The beach maintains a sense of tranquility and does not feel overcrowded, providing ample space for all visitors. Dogs and other animals are not allowed in the regulated areas during surveillance hours, but they are permitted on the beach outside of these periods as long as they are kept on a leash.
Accessibility to Plage du Métro is facilitated by a large, free car park and a bus service via the TxikTxak network. There is also monitored bike parking available during the season, making it convenient for both local and visiting beachgoers.
