Plage du Pigeonnier is a serene beach located in Royan, a town in the Charente-Maritime department in the Poitou-Charentes region of France. The beach is situated on the Boulevard de la Côte d'Argent, nestled between the Conches de Pontaillac and du Chay, and is known for its captivating coastal views.
The beach is approximately 100 meters long and is sheltered from winds by surrounding cliffs, making it a popular destination for families. The sandy terrain is dark in color, creating a unique appeal. Its gentle slope into the ocean and lack of waves make it an ideal spot for children to play and explore. At low tide, the beach expands significantly, providing an opportunity for visitors to search for crabs and shrimps. However, during high tide, the available space on the beach is limited.
Plage du Pigeonnier boasts a calm and intimate atmosphere, further enhanced by the beautiful villas from various eras that border the beach. The beach also offers a view of the other side of the Gironde estuary, including Le Verdon sur Mer.
The beach is supervised during the summer season, from July 2nd to August 28th, between 11 am and 7 pm. During this period, rentals of mattresses, tents, and parasols are available. The beach also offers activities such as kite flying and features an initiation pool. However, it is worth noting that naturism is prohibited on this beach, and it is non-smoking from July 1st to August 31st. Dogs are not allowed on the beach from April 1st to October 31st, as indicated by the municipal decree displayed at the entrance.
Access to the beach is available every day of the year through two points, one with a ramp and the other with stairs. However, the ramp is not suitable for wheelchairs. The beach is located near a pedestrian path and a road, which is not heavily trafficked.
Despite its many attractions, Plage du Pigeonnier is not overly crowded, providing a tranquil beach experience. However, it can get busy during the peak season. Parking can be challenging, especially in the summer, as the available parking lot behind the beach often fills up quickly. Therefore, it is recommended to access the beach on foot or by bike.
