Spiaggia Valle Muria is a secluded and picturesque beach located on the southwestern coast of Lipari, one of the Aeolian Islands. This beach is nestled between two breathtaking rocky promontories, Pietra Lunga and Pietra Menalda. It is a long and narrow beach with a dark shoreline, characterized by small caves carved into the tuff rock. The beach is known for its black sand, crystal-clear water, and the surrounding cliffs that offer a magnificent view of the sea stacks.
The natural beauty of Spiaggia Valle Muria makes it one of the most beloved and sought-after beaches on Lipari Island. It is a pebble and rock beach, with its dark color and reddish hues serving as reminders of volcanic eruptions from Mount S. Angelo centuries ago. The beach is part of a scenic area of great interest, with fumaroles indicating the volcanic nature of the island. The sea is rich in flora and fauna, making it ideal for snorkeling.
Spiaggia Valle Muria is accessible by both land and sea. Visitors can reach the beach by sea from the Marina Corta port or by a trail that leads to the beach. If traveling by land, visitors can drive up to a certain point and then must walk along a green path that descends towards the sea. This path can take between 15 to 40 minutes to traverse. Alternatively, visitors can take a bus from the ferry port to the beach.
Despite its popularity, the beach is less crowded compared to other beaches in Lipari. It is divided into two distinct sides, one easily accessible and the other requiring either swimming or climbing over rocks to reach. The latter side is particularly quiet, often hosting only a handful of visitors even during peak hours.
Spiaggia Valle Muria offers amenities such as sun beds for rent, though shade is limited. Visitors are advised to bring an umbrella as the cliffs and caves that provide some shade are subject to occasional rock falls. It is also recommended to bring plenty of water for the journey. Due to the steep path required to access the beach, it may not be suitable for older individuals, those with health concerns, or those with small children.
