Promontorio di Capo Mele is a picturesque rocky promontory located in the province of Savona, in the Liguria region of Italy. It is nestled between the municipalities of Andora, to the west, and Laigueglia, to the east. Known for its distinctive shape, the promontory is the westernmost coastal point visible from Genoa and other Ligurian locations on clear days, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area, including the island of Gallinara. The promontory's name, Capo Mele, is derived from a contraction of 'mole,' alluding to the windmills that were once built on its ridge. The eastern side of the promontory is steep, while the western side is more gradually sloping and has been extensively developed. The old inhabited center of Colla Micheri, which was once the residence of the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, is situated on the ridge of the promontory. At the top of Capo Mele, approximately 220 meters above sea level, sits a meteorological station. On the eastern slope of the promontory, the Capo Mele lighthouse stands as a landmark. Towards Laigueglia, about 50 meters away from the lighthouse, is the ancient sanctuary of Nostra Signora delle Penne, a Marian shrine. Despite its beauty and the amenities it offers, Capo Mele is not overly crowded, making it a serene spot for those seeking tranquility. It is accessible and relatively easy to reach, although caution is advised for those traveling on foot due to intermittent pedestrian walkways. The journey to the promontory involves a steep descent through a lush pine forest, offering a delightful experience for nature lovers.
